The EPA mandates that all renovation and repair service providers completing work in pre-1978 homes, schools, and child care facilities who disturb higher than 6 square feet of lead paint are required to become EPA Lead-Safe Certified. It is mandated that building contractors take an 8 hour EPA Lead certification training class, and firms to send an application to the EPA. Those who work on areas where children are present, are legally required to become EPA Lead-Safe Certified.
EPA encourages all businesses being affected by this rule to begin preparing themselves by training and becoming certified as soon as possible. Noncompliance by the company may end up in significant monetary penalties and can be exposed to lawful liability in the event that a child comes in contact with and/or suffers from lead poisoning. EPA has organized a compliance manual for contractors and construction trades that details all of the specifications of this rule.
